If you are reading this section, chances are a loved one has recently received a diagnosis of Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder. This can be an overwhelming and confusing diagnosis to learn about. Figuring out how you want to support your loved one is often even more overwhelming and confusing. .
At Blue Heron Psychotherapy Services, our goal is to provide you with the tools you need to help your loved one achieve his/her optimal lifestyle. We do so not only through teaching him/her skills and targeting challenging behaviour but also through supporting you, as you learn about the diagnosis and how to make room for it in your lifestyle. Your loved is still the same person you have known and loved. We value that and strive to work with you and your loved one within your comfort zone.
As a board certified behaviour analyst (BCBA), Heather supervises Autism intervention programs and is eligible to act as a clinical supervisor for provincially funded Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and Intensive Behaviour Intervention (IBI) in the province of Ontario.
With several years of experience working in public sector Autism intervention programming, we inform our development, delivery and supervision of direct funding option (DFO) Autism Intervention Programs with the criteria and standards set out by the province.
Learning to navigate the Autism intervention and supports system in Ontario can be overwhelming and time consuming for those seeking to set up services for their loved one. Heather is knowledgeable about the system, as well as quality indicators of services and programs. She can work with you to identify the services most suited to you/your loved ones' needs.
Sometimes, people just need behavioural consultation to learn a particular skill(s) or address a specific challenge. This service is available. Some commonly targeted skills may include (but are not limited to): toilet training, preparing snacks and meals, housekeeping skills (e.g., doing and putting away laundry, cleaning up after oneself, etc.), community living skills (e.g., completing a grocery shopping trip, riding in a car/bus, attending a recreational program, etc.), personal care skills (e.g., self-presentation and hygiene), executive functioning (i.e., identifying a goal and the steps needed to achieve that goal), homework completion, challenging behaviour, etc.. For teenagers and adults who have Autism Spectrum Disorder or developmental disorders, developing job search, interview and vocational skills are also available.
Blue Heron Psychotherapy Services does NOT offer crisis or emergency services. If this is an emergency or crisis, please call 911 or go to your nearest hospital emergency room.
